A Ginger! Awwww Sickkkk….. GROSSS!...
What is a Ginger?
Apparently, some teenagers in Canada have taken this South Park episode from 2005 a tad too far. The Canadian Police (RCMP) is investigating a facebook group which has been credited to initiating “Kick a Ginger Day" which occurred on November 20th 2008. The group had over 5,000 members and the 14 year old creator of the group now says he’s sorry. He's sorry because red-heads were kicked and bullied all day in schools across Canada.
Prior to November 20th, schools in various provinces sent out warnings (CBC Manitoba, CBC arts) but that didn’t stop the daylong event from occurring. Red heads skipped school in order to avoid beatings and the unfortunate ones were bruised and even hospitalized. Bullies were sent home and some suspended from school. (Vancouver Sun, CTV - BC, Canada.com, The Spec, PG Citizen)
All this stemmed from one facebook group. Also amazing is that of all the posts in response to the issue, 95% of them missed the point or made no sense at all:
Luckily, there are some who get it:
South Park is one of the funniest cartoons on tv and it’s known for its relentless satire on just about any controversial topic. Anything from racism to religion to political correctness.
However, each episode contains strong underlying moral messages that are hard to miss. The “Ginger Kids” episode is no different.South Park was making a parody of ignorance and bigotry. Yet... the message seems to have been completely lost on some teenagers.
South Park has a suggested viewing of 18+. It's clearly not a kids show. Kids are dumb. …I blame the parents.
